Knowledge of Samskrtam is the key to the ancient religious and secular literature of India, as well as to Indian system of medicine mathematics, civil engineering, architecture, sculpture - in short, anything of value in traditional Indian branches of learning. For a student of Vedanta, the study of this classical language is a way to sharpen the mind and prepare it to delve into the scriptures and the expositions on them.
Unfortunately, even in India Samskrtam is seldom used as a day-to-day means of communication. Even though a few people have recently attempted to revive Samskrtam as a spoken language, Samskrtam is generally as much a foreign language to an Indian as it is to a Westerner! The result is that in the study of this language, Indians have no great advantage over anyone else.
This book is an introductory text book of Samskrtam, intended for a student who plans t study the original classical texts of Vedanta. With this goal in view, formal grammar is stressed. A good working knowledge of this formal grammar is needed to study independently any scriptural text after being introduced to Vedanta by a teacher.
A highly structured approach is used here. Learning how to form a word is given as much importance as learning how to use it. The former, provides an insight into the language while the latter gives a command of the language.
